Jacob Rees-Mogg wants to scrap the Brexit Select Committee – help make sure he does not.

The Brexit Select Committee has been a vital space for holding the government to account over the last few years ably led by Hilary Benn

Now Jacob Rees Mogg wants to get rid of it.

Here is Hilary Benn in action:

Write to Jacob Rees-Mogg to tell him that this isn’t good enough – we deserve every opportunity for our democratically elected MPs to hold the Government to account, especially when it comes to something like the magnitude of Brexit. Here is my letter to Jacob Rees-Mogg:

The Rt Hon Jacob Rees-Mogg MP
Leader of the House of Commons
House of Commons
Westminster

16th January 2021

Dear Mr Rees-Mogg

I am writing to you in your capacity as Leader of the House of Commons, to express my view that it is of utmost importance that the lifespan of the Brexit Select Committee is extended.

Select committee serve to hold the government to account. Given the limited amount of time that MPs had to scrutinise and debate the Trade and Cooperation Agreement it is crucial that the Brexit Select Committee remains in place to continue their work in examining all aspects of Brexit and future negotiations. The Brexit Select Committee is an appropriate body for these activities because of its democratic nature, the expertise built up on the committee, and the fact that it reports to Parliament and thereby the British electorate…

The Government states that Brexit is going well therefore the Government would have nothing to fear from appropriate scrutiny of its work with regard to Brexit, in fact I would have thought the Government would welcome such scrutiny as it would demonstrate how well the Government is doing in making Brexit happen.

With regard to the work of UK musicians working in the EC perhaps you could provide me with the negotiating position of the Government and the negotiating position of the EC and the reason why an agreement was not reached. I look forward to hearing from you on this matter. A comprehensive and detailed answer would allay my fears on the dissolution of the Brexit Select Committee.

Until I receive this information there is a great deal of work for this committee to do.

Yours sincerely
Chris Hodgkins
